Cancers of the Female Reproductive System

Gynecological cancer is any cancer that starts in the female reproductive system. They can start in the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, vagina, vulva, or anywhere else within the female pelvis. Each kind of cancer is different, with symptoms, signs, and risk factors that vary. All women are at risk, and it increases with age. It’s best when cancers are found early, that way treatments can start at the cancer’s weakest time. While NCCRM is known to help with infertility Cary NC, they can also provide advice, services, and surgeries to prevent the spread and growth of cancer cells.

Below are the types of gynecological cancers that are common in women.

Cervical Cancer

This type of cancer starts in the cervix, which connects the vagina to the uterus. It mostly occurs in women over 30. The main cause of cervical cancer is human papillomavirus (HPV), which is a sexually transmitted disease. Screening tests and the HPV vaccine can help prevent cervical cancer. A sign of cervical cancer is unusual bleeding or discharge or pain during sex in the later stages, but there aren’t too many signs of it in the early stages.

Ovarian Cancer

Starting in the ovaries, ovarian cancer is known as the “silent killer,” as it can escalate quickly. If the cancer is in a central location, it can be removed with surgery and chemotherapy can be used to keep cancer cells from growing back. Some symptoms can be confused with normal bodily functions, so it’s important to document any unusual symptoms or signs that you notice. If you have any unusual vaginal bleeding (especially if you have gone through menopause) or discharge, pain or pressure in your lower pelvic area, bloating, and/or changes in your bathroom routine or eating habits, visit your doctor or gynecologist.

Uterine Cancer

The uterus is where the ovum goes after being expelled from the fallopian tubes. It’s also where a fetus would grow while pregnancy. Unusual cells can grow on the uterus and cause cancer. Anyone with a uterus can develop uterine cancer, but the risk gets higher with age. Abnormal bleeding and pain or pressure in your pelvic area are symptoms that can occur with uterine cancer. Uterine cancer, along with the others on this list, can cause infertility Cary NC. However, NCCRM offers services and treatments for cancers or other reproductive ailments.

Vaginal Cancer

Vaginal cancer is cancer that develops in the vaginal canal. This is one of the more rare forms of cancer, but it can still be deadly if not caught early and more difficult to treat if it spreads. Signs and symptoms of vaginal cancer are unusual bleeding, watery discharge, a lump or mass in your vagina, painful or frequent urination, constipation, and pain in your pelvic area.

Vulvar Cancer

The vulva is the outer part of your reproductive system, so cancer in this area can be easier to spot and treat. Like vaginal cancer, it is fairly rare; diagnosis of vulvar cancer only accounts for 5% of all gynecologic cancers diagnosed in the U.S. Itching, burning, or bleeding that doesn’t stop, changes in the skin color, rashes or lumps that won’t go away, and pain during urination and sex can all be symptoms or signs of vulvar cancer.
