Common Menstrual Disorders

Every woman experiences menstrual cramps, bloating, and mood swings in the days leading up to her period- but for some, these symptoms are much more severe. One in four women experiences at least one pelvic disorder in their lifetime. Pelvic disorders include conditions like endometriosis, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). These disorders can cause severe pain, fatigue, heavy bleeding, and infertility. Fortunately, there are treatments available from your Raleigh OBGYN for all of these conditions.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. This can cause severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, and infertility. Endometriosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. For those who struggle with endometriosis, some treatments can help manage the symptoms. These include over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen, prescription pain medications, hormone therapy, and surgery from your Raleigh OBGYN center.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. They are very common- it is estimated that 3 out of 4 women will develop uterine fibroids at some point in their lives. Fibroids can cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and difficulty urinating or defecating. In some cases, they can also cause infertility. Treatments for uterine fibroids include over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen, prescription pain medications from your Raleigh OBGYN, hormone therapy, and surgery.

Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is a condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus grows into the muscle walls of the uterus. This can cause severe pelvic pain during menstruation as well as heavy bleeding and fatigue. Adenomyosis affects an estimated 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. Treatments include over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen, Raleigh OBGYN center prescription pain medications, hormone therapy, and surgery.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of a woman’s reproductive organs. PID can cause fever, chills, nausea or vomiting, vaginal discharge with a foul odor, heavy bleeding, or burning during urination. If left untreated, PID can damage the fallopian tubes, ovaries, or uterus, and lead to infertility. PID is most commonly caused by sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia or gonorrhea. Treatment for PID typically includes a course of antibiotics. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary. If PID has caused damage to the reproductive organs, surgery from a Raleigh OBGYN may be needed to repair the damage.
