Endometrial Ablation

Understanding Endometrial Ablation: A Solution for Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

For many women, heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding can be more than just inconvenient — it can affect daily life, energy levels, and overall well-being. If you are experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding and have completed your family, there is a safe and effective treatment option that may help: endometrial ablation.

What Is Endometrial Ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive, outpatient surgical procedure designed to treat abnormal uterine bleeding. The goal of the procedure is to destroy the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which is responsible for menstrual bleeding.

This procedure is performed under light sedation, which means recovery time is often quicker compared to more invasive surgeries. Most women can return home the same day.

How Does the Procedure Work?

At NCCRM, endometrial ablation is typically performed using a specialized device called NovaSure®, which uses a mesh electrode array to ablate (destroy) the endometrial lining gently. The procedure itself usually takes only a few minutes, but it can provide long-lasting results.

What to Expect After Endometrial Ablation

Outcomes can vary from woman to woman:

  • Many women will stop having periods altogether after the procedure.

  • Others may still experience light or occasional bleeding, but significantly less than before.

  • Relief from heavy, irregular bleeding often improves overall comfort and quality of life.

It’s important to note that endometrial ablation is not a treatment for women who wish to become pregnant. Because the procedure destroys the uterine lining, pregnancy after ablation is rare and may be unsafe. For this reason, it is recommended only for women who no longer wish to have children.

Is Endometrial Ablation Right for You?

If you are struggling with abnormal uterine bleeding, heavy periods, or cycles that interfere with your daily life, and you do not plan to have children in the future, you may be a candidate for endometrial ablation.

Our experienced doctors at NCCRM can help you determine whether this procedure is the right solution for your needs.
