What Is a Gestational Carrier?
A gestational carrier is a woman who carries and delivers a baby for someone else. Unlike traditional surrogacy, the carrier is not genetically related to the child. Instead, embryos are created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the intended parents’ or donors’ eggs and sperm, and then transferred to the carrier’s uterus.
This means the carrier’s role is to nurture and protect the pregnancy, but she is not the biological mother.
Who Chooses to Become a Gestational Carrier?
Many women choose to become carriers because they have enjoyed healthy pregnancies of their own and want to help others experience the same joy. They often describe the experience as deeply rewarding, both emotionally and spiritually.
Gestational carriers are typically women between 21 and 40 years old who:
